Georgia O'Keeffe Museum

Preparing for your visit: Santa Fe Galleries

Where are the Santa Fe Galleries?

The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum is located a few short blocks from the historic Santa Fe Plaza, on 217 Johnson St.

How big is the Museum?

As a single artist museum, we are small but mighty. Nine themed galleries comprise the Santa Fe Galleries. You will also find an orientation gallery that contains a timeline and short documentary about O’Keeffe. To watch our videos before you visit, click here.

What will I see?

The Museum’s collection spans O’Keeffe’s entire artistic career, lasting six decades. We have everything from her childhood pencil portraits to watercolor paintings she made in her eighties. Our collection rotates, so expect to see a changing selection of her works with each visit. O’Keeffe was savvy about distributing her artworks, and many famous pieces are located in collections across the United States. For this reason, we do not own Poppy,1927, or her largest painting, Sky Above Clouds IV1965.

How long should I plan for my visit?

Typically, people spend between 45 minutes and 1 ½ hours for a visit. This includes watching the two introductory films and enjoying our Museum Store. We have a free audio tour app available for download. Forgot your earbuds? We have some available for a nominal fee. To learn more about our Museum tour offerings, click here.

Is the Museum wheelchair accessible? May I bring my service dog?

Yes and yes. The Museum Galleries are single-level and wheelchair accessible. Service animals are welcome.

Can I take photos?

Yes and no. You may photograph most of our collection without a flash. However, some works may not be photographed – these are marked with a “no photography” icon. Tripods and/or movie/video cameras are not allowed.

Where can I park?

The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum does not have on-site public parking available. City of Santa Fe parking garages can be found nearby at the Santa Fe Convention Center (enter from S. Federal Place) and at the corner of Sandoval and E. San Francisco Streets. Metered parking is also available throughout downtown Santa Fe.

What can I carry with me in the galleries?

In the interest of protecting artworks, only small bags and purses are welcome in the Galleries. For your convenience and comfort, all backpacks, luggage, food, and drinks may be secured in one of our complimentary lockers.

What is the weather like in Santa Fe?

Santa Fe has a high desert climate with an elevation of 7,000 feet above sea level and generally dry weather. We recommend you check the weather when planning your travel wardrobe, and bring layers.

When will the Museum Galleries be closed?

The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum is closed:

New Year’s Day
Easter Sunday
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day

In 2019, the Museum will be closed on the following dates as we rotate our collection:

February 25, to February 28, 2019

Preparing for your visit: the O'Keeffe Welcome Center, and Home & Studio, Abiquiu

Where is the Historic Home & Studio located? When is the home open to visit?

Located in the village of Abiquiu, 60 miles northwest of Santa Fe, the home is open to the public for seasonal tours with advance reservations. Tours may be booked online, here.

What can I expect to see?

A tour of Georgia O’Keeffe’s historic adobe home and studio offers an experience of the environment in which she lived and worked. The house inspired more than two dozen paintings: a door through the patio wall attracted her attention on a daily bases and she painted it more than twenty times. Similarly, the cottonwood trees, growing in the Chama River Valley below her studio, were the subject of more than two dozen paintings.

Where do tours start? How long do they last?

Please check in at the O’Keeffe Welcome Center at least 30 minutes before your reservation time. This will allow time for viewing a short film about the Abiquiú home and studio, and ensure that everyone is on-board when the shuttle bus is set to leave. Behind the Scenes tours commence directly at the Home & Studio.

Note: GPS directions and cell service are unreliable in this region; please pay close attention to these directions and do not rely upon a device.

Standard Tour duration is approximately 60 minutes. Special and Behind the Scenes Tours last about 90 minutes.

Is the Historic Home & Studio wheelchair accessible?

Please call our tour office during business hours to discuss your accessibility needs, (505) 946-1098.

Can I take photographs?

Limited photography is available at select locations during the Home & Studio Tour.

Where can I eat in Abiquiu?

Bode’s General Store is a combination café/gas station/grocery store. Stop by for a breakfast burrito. The kitchen is open from 10:30 am to 3 pm every day. The Abiquiu Inn restaurant serves sit-down breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Meal service is from 7 am to 9 pm.

What is Ghost Ranch?

Ghost Ranch is a 20,000-acre educational retreat operated by the Presbyterian Church. It is not part of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, but Ghost Ranch is one of our greatest partners. It offers classes, tours, horseback rides, and amazing views of many of O’Keeffe’s favorite sites. Learn more about Ghost Ranch

Did Georgia O’Keeffe live at Ghost Ranch?

Georgia O’Keeffe owned a second house and nine acres on Ghost Ranch property. The house is part of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum’s assets. It is not open to the public.
